For today’s post, I am going to show you some inspiration pictures for my cover, ads, and some miscellaneous pictures to have for the T.O.C.
On my previous posts, I made it very prominent that I want some of my pictures to be against a green background (plants), but as you can see in the pictures, none of the covers have that. This is something I am planning on challenging. The majority of beauty and fashion magazine covers are composed of pictures taken against a backdrop, usually a solid color. I am by no means opposed to that, however, I strongly believe having nature in the background will accentuate the elements of the spring season. If that does not turn out as expected, I am just going to take the pictures against a white background and then have the bright colors and patterns of the clothing be the statement.
As you can see, these covers are shot against a white background, but the title and some cover lines are in different font colors, which acts as the pop of color. As for the cover on the left, the pattern and texture of the skirt act as a focal point for the model. In this cover, a white top is also paired with the skirt, but it doesn’t entirely blend with the background because of Ariana Grande’s (the model) bronzed complexion. I have to keep that in mind when taking these pictures. Some of my friends have a darker skin tone and dark brown hair which will aid in the separation between the white background and the white clothes. As for the model on the other cover, her baby blue dress is what acts as the focal point and barrier against a plain white backdrop. Her pose, however, is not my favorite, mainly because it looks too forced and awkward, but I am not entirely opposed to trying something else besides the ordinary poses seen in all covers. One thing I WILL NOT challenge is where the model is looking at. Having the model not look at the camera is risky, therefore, I will have the model look into the camera.
The following ads are all for a foundation, which is not what I will be advertising, but the concept is within the same realm. Again, I like the idea of having the model looking straight at the camera to create a personal and intense tone. Obviously, the product has to be shown, which I mentioned how I plan to do so in a previous post, but I also like the idea of having the actual product pictured. Besides having the container photographed, I want to try to find a way to aesthetically place the powder I will be advertising on a white paper and try and get an artistic picture out of it. I am also thinking that will be how I will show the shade range since I don’t actually have different shades of it (I also explained how I will be doing that in a previous post). I still haven't figured out what my other ads will be about--I want to have more than one--but the idea is inherently the same. The only other one I have in mind is some eyeshadow ad. For that, I could do a close-up shot in which the model’s dramatic eyeshadow is very much noticeable.
When it comes to the miscellaneous photos, I noticed that many tables of contents or 2-page spreads have shots of makeup and accessories spread out. I like the aesthetic it creates and I would love to integrate it; I have some warm toned sunglasses and lipsticks that would make the shot perfect for spring. Other pictures that I would love to include are random shots of makeup like lipstick swatches, nail polish drips, powder, foundation drips, etc. Since I am planning to take various pictures of the outfits I showed in my previous post, I will have plenty of options to choose from for the fashion side of the magazine.
That concludes my post for today! This upcoming week, I will try and focus on not only deciding on a layout already but also work on a shooting schedule. The reason I don’t have a schedule already is because all my pictures can be taken throughout the span of a day, but I would have to coordinate with my friends and see what day we all have time. I will also start looking for a website or program to create a barcode for my cover, but that is certainly just a detail.
Wish me luck on the next step!
